Harness your children

Excellent classroom for people to grow and enjoy creating something new and exciting. Catching people's attention allows them to follow and be interested. In turn this makes people try harder and more often accomplishing goals and practices that they may never have been able to find or know. Allowing students to interact and show off there abilities can only improve their confidence and outlook in school. I never saw one bored kid in the classroom and that says a great deal. I think it is great that a teacher is willing to put the time and effort as well as putting aside her ego for the good of the kids.

I also saw very little in the way of minorities, special needs students, or lack of equipment. Each kid seemed to have full access to their own computer, devices such as iphones and never realized that this was a normal public funded school. My high school never had a computer in the building that I was aware of. Obviously, Georgia has funds in abundance compared to Alabama if it is able to pay off each teachers student loans and outfit the classroom with enough technology for all students to have this kind of opportunity. My wife has one computer and a smart board. The smart board was installed over the summer and is facing the side view of the class instead of the front of the class. The cable is too short to go from her desk to the smart board and moving the desk to the side is not a option because of lack of room. Yet, the school can't give her a new cable that is long enough rendering the "new" technology useless. Baldwin County is bankrupt and trying to lay off teachers who are tenured, so I don't think there technology is going to improve over the next few years.

  2. My wife teaches at Murphy high school and is very fortunate to be doing so. She had wanted to go to Baldwin but being that she has tenure, teaches forensics and zoology, and Baldwin county is truggling we decided to hold off. The county is calling an emergency meeting on Wed. night at Daphne high school to discuss the $5.7 million dollar short fall.

  3. I agree! Mobile and Baldwin County needs more funding. A seperate tax in the county for school funding alone would be great. Education is so important. When you have a good school system you have more people wanting to move to your district. This creates higher property value, more local bussiness, and more local jobs. When your schools are failing your local economy is too! We should look at some of Birmingham's schools for examples. The city of Saraland is trying to memic Mt.Brook schools, I hope they have great success.

  4. Jessica,
The budget is great its the way that it is spent that is wrong. Transportation to Murphy High for the 2,000 of the 2,600 students that are bused into the area is over $600,000 per year. How many schools are there in Mobile County? All schools in the county could save over $10,000,000 if the kids used public transport or another source to go to a LOCAL school.
Bus drivers could be retrained to serve as a specific subject assistant. Meaning that when Biology is taught they could help the kid understand and not sit confused while the teacher moves on.
College of Education such as South could start programs with schools. Allowing the students to opt. to student teach in the morning or afternoon every day or two days a week at 1/3 the salary of teachers. Giving the student experience they might want and enough cash to pay for their entire education.
The school system benefits from a great experienced teacher and another assistant to improve the over all standard of education.

  5. I wasnt aware of the bus problem. I THINK YOU SHOULD HAVE TO GO TO YOUR LOCAL SCHOOL NO TRANSFER! UNLESS YOU HAVE SPECIAL NEEDS AND YOUR LOCAL SCHOOL CANT MEET YOUR NEEDS

  6. If your district is failing then you are allowed to opt to go to another school district and the government is responsible for getting you there.
I think that is great. The kids need a great education system. However, if the government is not willing to fund the schools to ensure each child is getting a great education, then it must look for ways to adapt or overcome the obstacle.
Smaller class sizes, technology improvements and training, aids, are cheaper in the long run.

How would I spend the money????

Training-offer one week courses at the college of education each summer specializing in a specific area.
(Such as movie animation and learning.)
3,000 teachers in Mobile County. 1,000 teachers per summer having to attend every three years to be updated and trained.
A network to answer questions and solve problems. Cost would be less than $2,000,000 each year.

Allow the same teachers that took the summer class a refresher course in the fall for two days to brush up on the skills they have. Substitute teacher cost $1,700,000 each year.

Universities Collaborating with the county on what text books they are buying and lesson plans prior to them coming out. Then having IT students and Education Majors in final years work with faculty to make video clips and segments based on the upcoming year. Giving teachers access to the technology advantages as a reward.
Teachers then have a starting point and a means to develop or create. $2,300,000 per year.

$150 worth of related technology improvements for each TEACHER who attends the summer class. $1,500,000 per year.

300 teacher aids to work at the failing schools. $2,550,000 per year.
